What Is Magnesium?
It is the fourth most abundant element on Earth, found in both sea and soil. It is highly reactive; when purified it 'burns' in water, giving off heat, gas, and a brilliant-white light - making it useful for fireworks and theatrical effects!
Its healing properties were popularised in 17th Century England when animals drinking from a 'bitter well' healed quicker from their wounds. The well-water contained magnesium sulfate, later called 'Epsom' salts, named after the well's location. Epsom salt baths are still used to relax muscles, promote sleep, and detoxify aluminum.
Its chemical reactivity makes it an ideal catalyst (speeding up biological reactions) and it's essential for over 300 processes in the body. Plants also rely on it, using it to synthesize chlorophyll (green pigment converting sunlight into food and energy) and its deficiency causes leaves to yellow.
How Much Do We Need?
Levels of minerals in the body are balanced between digestion (absorbing new minerals) and excretion (gut and kidneys removing unwanted minerals to prevent excess). Maintaining balance is critical for the correct transmission of electrical impulses, blood filtration, and blood pressure. Even a minor disturbance causes cramps, confusion, extreme tiredness, and irregular heartbeat.
Government guidelines for dietary magnesium vary by country and gender, and they only specify the amount needed to survive. Since soil quality is completely ignored, and the de-mineralizing impact of processing is not calculated, nutritional labels are over-estimating magnesium content and we are not getting enough. Why Are We Deficient?
Magnesium deficiency starts with depleted soil growing industrial food crops. Imbalanced fertilizers poisoned soil, and aluminum toxicity combined to reduce magnesium assimilation. Plant growth is stunted, levels of antioxidants drop, and nutritional content is reduced.
You need a significant amount of magnesium; bones alone requiere 25g to keep them strong. Stress, toxins, and medications increase magnesium requirements, and acids, like coffee, reduce absorption. Toxic aluminum also 'competes' with magnesium in the body, effectively reducing levels even more.
Significant deficiency creates fatal issues with metabolism, blood pressure, heart, and nerve function. Mild deficiency is associated with elevated blood pressure, poor blood sugar control (leading to insulin resistance or diabetes), insomnia, low energy, depression, anxiety, and alcohol addiction.
