The magic of elderberries

Magic Elixir: The Health Benefits of Elderberries

If there were royalty in the berry world, elderberries would wear the crown. These tiny, deep-purple gems have been used for centuries in folk medicine, brewed into syrups, teas, and tonics to ward off illness and keep the body strong.

Packed with antioxidants, elderberries are like little warriors for your immune system, helping to fight inflammation, support heart health, and even shorten the duration of colds.

But what makes them so special? And how can you harness their benefits in your own routine? Let’s dive into the magic of elderberries and uncover why they’ve been a staple in herbal medicines for generations.

What Are Elderberries?

Elderberries, also known as Sambucus nigra, are flowering plants with richly colored purple and black berries found in regions of North America and Europe. Historically, they were referred to as a "Holy Tree" and, Hippocrates called them “nature’s medicine chest.”

People used them in the Middle Ages in the form of juice to aid with skin softness, complexion, and beauty. Indigenous tribes within North America used the elderberry plant to help treat bruises, burns, and fever. Some groups even believed elderberries could ward off evil spirits and thus ate large quantities of them.

The use of elderberries carried on through the 1900s, treating individuals who showed symptoms of the cold and flu or asthma with elderberry syrup.

Benefits of Elderberries

contain extraordinary amounts of minerals and antioxidants, primarily polyphenols and anthocyanins.

Elderberry’s indigo-blue pigments mitigate free radical damage and reduce mucus. Its powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant compounds allow your body to naturally detox, cleanse your blood of toxins, and feel cleaner both mentally and physically.

Nutrients in Elderberries

Elderberries contain a variety of key nutrients such as:

  • Potassium
  • Iron
  • Zinc
  • Magnesium
  • Calcium
  • Fiber

Each of these nutrients help your immune system withstand disease and benefit your body more than you imagined.

Reduce Cold and Flu Symptoms

When consumed daily, whether as a drink, supplement, or syrup (the most popular form), elderberries support a stronger immune system

In a 2004 study of a group of people with flu-like symptoms, researchers found those who consumed at least 15 milliliters of elderberry syrup four times a day had not only reduced flu symptoms but had a shorter duration than those who were given a placebo.

Improve Heart Health

Elderberries have positive effects on protecting your cardiovascular system to prevent heart disease or even diabetes. A 2015 review states that the antioxidants in elderberries help balance cholesterol and blood glucose levels, both of which contribute to better heart health.

Reduce Inflammation

Consider this fact: More than 125 million Americans suffer from at least one inflammation-related chronic disease, whether it’s cancer, diabetes, heart disease, or arthritis.

When your body contains low amounts of antioxidants, your immune system becomes less resilient to fight off toxic substances in the body, potentially leading to certain chronic diseases.

Elderberries assist with reducing inflammation by increasing the production of antioxidants in your body which can ultimately help ease joint pain for those with arthritis and swelling for burns, bruises, or even toothaches.

Support Gut Health

Your gut does more than digest food—it’s the command center for overall health.

Anthocyanins create a bioactive effect within your body to target harmful bacteria and prevent microbial infections from growing and living in your gut to help aid in better gut health, digestion, and bowel movements.

Boost Brain Health

Equally important, elderberries can contribute to improving cognitive health and treating cognitive impairment by increasing the antioxidant activities within the mitochondrial to help keep your mind sharp and young.

Improve Skin Health

Lastly, both the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties in elderberries help protect your skin cells as you age and are a great natural remedy for acne.
